This walkthrough follows Episode 01 from the alarm clock to the end of the episode. It was worked out from the game’s own data files: every condition an action has to meet, and everything it changes, so it takes the shortest route the game allows and tells you why each step is needed.

It follows the 2.0 release for iPhone and the HD release for iPad and Mac. The 2009 original has the same story and the same puzzles.

    Video guide

    How to play

    • Hold a finger on the scene and a magnifying glass appears. Move it over something you can use and its name shows; let go to see what you can do with it, such as Examine, Open or Talk to.
    • Pinch to zoom in and out, and drag to look around: most rooms are wider than the screen.
    • Pull down the tab at the top of the screen for the inventory. Tap an item to turn it in 3D and read what Louis says; turning it over can show more.
    • To use an item on something, drag it from the inventory onto it. To combine two items, drag one onto the other in the inventory.
    • In conversations, the green words add new topics when you tap them. You can also type a word on the dialog keyboard; a few puzzles need it.
    • Louis’ phone has his contacts and a camera. Open it from the menu to call someone or take a photo; pinch on the camera to zoom.

Wake up and find your pills

The bedroom, with Anna by the bed
    1. The game opens in the Bedroom of the Everetts’ house, with the alarm clock ringing and Anna Everett telling Louis to wake up. Choose Switch off on the alarm clock on the bedside table.
    2. Its button is stuck: shake your iPhone or iPad to stop the ringing. Afterwards you can turn the tuning wheel to listen to one of four radio stations, but nothing needs it.
    3. You can’t leave the room until the alarm is off. Talk to Anna if you like: tap the green word medications, then safe, to hear about the pills Louis has started locking away.
    4. Move the middle panel of the Japanese triptych above the bed. Louis puts it on the floor, and behind it is a small safe.
    5. Choose Open on the safe. Louis can’t remember the code. Ask Anna about the Code if you want a hint: he locks himself in the bathroom every morning before opening the safe, so the memo must be in there.
    6. Go out to the Corridor and into the Bathroom. Open the tap: the hot water steams up the mirror. Admire the mirror, and the steam shows the code: “This must be the safe code!”
    7. Back in the bedroom, Open the safe and turn its dial: left to 20, right to 80, then left to 30. On the iPad the dial turns with two fingers.
    8. Take the bottle of Valex. Louis swallows a pill straight away, feels much better, and notices that Anna has gone to the bathroom.

    Fix the boiler

    The boiler’s control panel
    1. In the Corridor, Anna screams for help. Go into the Bathroom and Talk to her: the water is cold, and Louis has to do something about it. Until you do, he won’t go anywhere else.
    2. Ask her about the Boiler: it’s in the Toilet off the hall.
    3. Go through the Lounge and the Kitchen to the Hall, and into the Toilet. Check the boiler: its panel is all in Cyrillic, and Louis needs the instructions.
    4. Back in the bathroom, ask Anna about the Settings, tap the green word notice, and ask about the Notice. She thinks it might be in the kitchen, where they keep all the instructions.
    5. In the Kitchen, Open the messy cupboard; Louis won’t touch it until Anna has mentioned the notice. Take the boiler notice. It’s in Russian, but its drawings show how to set the boiler.
    6. In the Toilet, Check the boiler again and set its panel as the notice’s drawings show: the top-left switch to the left, the top-right switch to the right, both bottom switches to the left, and the two knobs turned to the notches drawn on the notice.
    7. Hold your finger on the start button for two seconds. If the panel is set right, the boiler starts up; if not, nothing happens.
    8. The boiler still has to be lit. Take the matches next to it and use them on the boiler: “Yes! The boiler is running!”
    9. Go back to the Bathroom. Anna thanks you and goes to the kitchen to make breakfast.

    The Goodman file

The corridor, with the computer and the printer

    Breakfast, and Felicity’s call

    1. In the Kitchen, Talk to Anna. Louis is two hours late on a very important day: “Get your wallet and let’s go.”
    2. Go into the Hall. Louis’ phone is ringing there. Take the phone: it’s Felicity Archer, furious, reminding you that you meet Mr Goodman today and that his file should be ready.
    3. Take your wallet from the hall as well.

    Complete the file

    1. Go out to the Garden. Open the mailbox and take the envelope.
    2. In the inventory, turn the envelope over to its back: Louis opens it and takes out the Goodman file. It isn’t complete.
    3. Open your phone, go to the contacts and call Felicity. She tells you to follow the instructions in the email she sent, which you haven’t read.
    4. Go up to the Corridor and Use the computer. Open the mailbox, then Felicity’s email, “Goodman file: pictures”.
    5. Touch each of the four photos attached to the email. Each one slides off to the printer and is printed.
    6. Leave the computer. Take the four photos from the printer in the corridor.
    7. In the inventory, combine each photo with the Goodman file. With all four in, the file is complete.
    8. Call Felicity again and tell her the file is complete. She’ll wait for you at the shop.

    Anna’s car keys

    1. Anna is in the Garden now. Talk to her: she can’t find the car keys, and remembers seeing them near her phone.
    2. Listen out: her phone is ringing in the Bathroom. Her favourite towel is now on the floor there: Check it, and under it are Anna’s phone and the car keys.
    3. In the garden, give the car keys (or her phone) to Anna: Louis doesn’t have a licence.
    4. Enter the car. Louis won’t set off until he has his wallet and the file is complete. Then it’s off into town.

    Dritilla for Felicity

    The city centre of Jalonsville

    The stranger

    1. As you arrive in the city centre, Felicity calls: she has awful stomach cramps and needs Dritilla 50mg from Don’s pharmacy, now.
    2. A few moments later (or as soon as you try to leave the square), a stranger in green with a cap stops Louis to ask for a cigarette. Cigarettes are banned, and Louis threatens to call the police.
    3. Go into the pharmacy and talk to Don Inotelli. Ask about the Dritilla 50mg: he sold his last box ten minutes ago to a customer. Tap that green word and ask about the Customer: it was the man in green.
    4. Back in the square, Talk to the stranger and ask about the Dritilla 50mg. He’ll only sell it back for a whole pack of cigarettes.

    A photo for Todd

    1. Go into Orlando’s and talk to Todd Corman. Ask how he is (Todd): he’s in love, but doesn’t dare say with whom.
    2. Type FELICITY on the dialog keyboard. Todd lights up: it’s her. If you’re stuck, Anna at the grocery suggests trying the name on him.
    3. Now ask him the favour about Cigarettes. He’ll find you a pack in exchange for a photo of Felicity, taken with your phone; a good one.
    4. Go to the antique shop. Push the small African knick-knack on the table: it falls, and Felicity bends over to pick it up.
    5. While she’s bent over, open the phone’s camera and take her picture with her in the frame: “Here it is! It’s in the box!” A photo of her standing up won’t satisfy Todd.
    6. Back at Orlando’s, use the phone on Todd. He’s delighted, and gives you a pack of cigarettes.
    7. In the square, use the cigarettes on the stranger. He gives you the Dritilla.
    8. In the antique shop, use the Dritilla on Felicity. Now there’s no coffee, and Mr Goodman is on his way.

    Two coffees

Todd behind the bar at Orlando’s
    1. At Orlando’s, ask Todd for two coffees (Coffee). Three dollars, and Louis has no cash: tap it and ask about the Cash.
    2. Todd suggests another photo: tap it and ask about Another photo. He’s had enough of Felicity and would like photos of Anna.
    3. Tap Anna and ask about her. Louis loses his temper.
    4. Punch Todd. He hands over the two coffees: the coffee.
    5. In the antique shop, use the coffee on Felicity. Mr Goodman will be here any minute: she sends you to wait in the office.

    Goodman and the painting

The office of the antique shop

    The meeting

    1. Go into the office. Felicity serves Mr Goodman the coffee you fetched, then leaves you alone with him.
    2. Use the complete Goodman file on Goodman.
    3. Talk to Goodman and ask about the File. He isn’t interested: he’s here about a painting Louis owns. Tap it and ask about the Painting: “Island of the Dead”. He wants a photo of it, urgently.

The keys and the account book

    1. The car keys are with Anna. Go to the grocery, talk to Anna Everett and ask about the Painting. She gives you the car keys, even though you don’t have a licence.
    2. As you step out into the square, Anna calls: she needs her account book from home, urgently. It’s locked in the cabinet in the lounge, and the key is in your office. (Type KEY to her if you forget where.)
    3. In the antique shop’s office, Take the keys on the wall: the small key. Louis won’t take them before Anna’s call.
    4. In the square, use the car keys on the car to drive home.
    5. In the Corridor, open the phone’s camera and photograph the “Island of the Dead” painting, zoomed in: “Here it is! It’s in the box!” A wide shot is too small for Goodman to see.
    6. In the Lounge, use the small key on the locked cabinet and take Anna’s account book.
    7. In the Garden, use the car keys on the car to drive back into town.
    8. At the grocery, use the account book on Anna. There is fifty times more money than there should be, and she wants to talk about it tonight.

    The photograph

    1. Back in the office, use your phone on Goodman to show him the photo. He won’t look at it until Anna has her account book, and only a zoomed-in photo will do.

    The end of the episode

    A hotel room
    1. Goodman recognises the painting: “So he was right; it IS in your house.” He begins to explain…
    2. Louis wakes up in a hotel room, with only a business card in his pockets. Examine the view from the window: the Empire State Building. New York.
    3. The episode ends: to be continued in Episode 02.

    If you’re stuck

    Louis won’t leave the bedroom
Switch off the alarm clock first: shake the device while it rings.
You can’t find the safe’s code
Before taking the pills, open the hot tap in the bathroom and look at the steamed-up mirror: 20 left, 80 right, 30 left.
The cupboard in the kitchen won’t open
Ask Anna about the Settings, tap “notice”, and ask about the Notice.
    The boiler won’t start
Set the switches as on the notice: top-left left, top-right right, both bottom ones left; set the knobs as drawn, and hold the button for two seconds.
The boiler started but there’s no hot water
Light it: use the matches from the toilet on it.
The hall phone keeps you from the garden
Take the phone: it’s Felicity calling.
The computer says Louis has no time
Open the envelope (turn it over in the inventory), then call Felicity.
    The file isn’t complete
Print all four photos from Felicity’s email, take them from the printer, and combine each with the file. Then call Felicity.
    The car won’t go
You need your wallet, the complete file (with Felicity told so on the phone), and Anna’s keys given back to her.
    The stranger won’t talk
Ask Don about the Dritilla, tap “customer”, and ask about the Customer.
Todd won’t help with the cigarettes
Ask him about himself (Todd), then type FELICITY on the keyboard.
Todd isn’t happy with the photo
Push the knick-knack in the shop and photograph Felicity while she bends over to pick it up.
Todd won’t give you the coffee
Go through Coffee, Cash, Another photo and Anna, then punch him.
Goodman doesn’t care about the photo
Give Anna her account book first, and make sure the photo of the painting is zoomed in.
You can’t take the keys in the office
Get the car keys from Anna first; she calls about the account book as you leave the grocery.
