    Louis Everett

    Episode 01

Louis runs a small antique shop in Jalonsville, New Jersey, in a country whose government has banned tobacco, closed the church and taken charge of medicine. He suffers from crushing morning headaches and nightmares of falling into a crowd of strange people, and he keeps them at bay with Valex, a government drug that Don the pharmacist prescribes him. He has taken to locking his pills in the bedroom safe.

Episode 01 is a single bad morning. Louis wakes two hours late on the day Mr. Goodman, a New York art dealer whose business could clear his debts, is due at the shop. Before he can get there he has to fix the boiler for Anna, find her car keys and her account book, put together the client file his secretary Felicity has emailed him about, and bring Felicity her Dritilla. Don’s last box went to a stranger in town, who will only trade it for a pack of cigarettes, and the only cigarettes Louis can find cost him a compromising photo of Felicity for Todd.

Goodman barely looks at the file. He asks about a painting Louis owns, “Island of the Dead”, and sends him home to photograph it. Seeing the photo, he says, “So he was right; it IS in your house,” and starts to explain. Louis wakes up in a hotel room overlooking the Empire State Building.

    Episode 02

Louis is in room 1112 of the Bellevue Hotel in New York with no memory of getting there, and can’t reach Anna. The receptionist says he checked in almost a week ago with a long-haired man in black. Goodman’s office says Goodman left the country a week ago and that Louis was never on his schedule. Louis gets into Goodman’s warehouse anyway, then heads for the Chinatown bus home to New Jersey.

A psychopath from the hotel, who has been stalking him for hours, catches up with him at a gas station on the way and murders the attendant. Louis locks himself in the toilets while the killer hammers on the door, and suddenly finds himself somewhere else, listening to his best friend John comforting him about Anna.

    Episode 03

Louis comes to in John’s bathroom in the middle of winter. Six months have passed since his last memory, Anna has disappeared, and their house and his shop have been wrecked and covered in strange graffiti. Everyone tells him he has been back from New York for months, and even that he signed a contract with Goodman. He remembers none of it. He questions the town about Anna, gathers evidence and takes it to the police, who laugh at him until he comes back with enough to make them listen.

The evidence points to a second life Anna kept from him: a man with a ponytail who visited whenever Louis was away, arguments about something called the “Exit”, and a tape on which someone tells her she has no choice, while she asks to say goodbye to “him”. When Louis plays the police a recording from his phone line, the scene dissolves. He wakes on a beach in what appears to be an asylum, where a doctor called Rafael asks whether he has swallowed his medicine this time.

      Louis Everett · 30, married

“That’s me. I own a little Antiques shop in Jalonsville, New Jersey. I still have some debts to pay off, and problems in my marriage, but I’m confident it will all be sorted sooner or later…”

    Trivia

    • His own favourite painting is Böcklin’s “Island of the Dead”, which hangs in the corridor at home: “I feel I have a connection with this place.”
    • He has no driving licence, so the couple’s DTC is Anna’s to drive.
    • Typing the names and nicknames behind the game in Episode 01 (AURELIEN, VAL, KICKER, MIKA, COULOUK, PHI, GOT, PANDION and ARMBREAKER) gets a catchphrase back, from “Number one!” to “Mister Mole!!!!”. In v1.2.3 whoever Louis is talking to shouts it; in the 2.0 versions Louis says it himself. The Italian translation swaps them for nine other names (IDA, MATTEO, ANDREA, GIULIA, CLAUDIA, AMBRA, COSIMO, VALENTINA and SETTE), each with a line of its own.
    • In Episode 02, typing ROGUE PLANET makes Louis plug “the best strategy game released on iPhone/iPodTouch” and offer to open iTunes. A poster outside Goodman’s warehouse advertises it too: “These developers look somewhat pretentious…”
