    Astrid

    Part 1 · St Jeoire

Anne is meeting her after work on the day Louis leaves for Paris. Louis doesn’t like her seeing a fortune teller.

Part 3 · Back in St Jeoire

Astrid opens her door to Louis when he tells her Anne has disappeared. Anne wasn’t well, she says: she had discovered something, become obsessed with it and wanted more than Astrid could teach her. She reads Louis’ cards, the Tower, the Nameless One, the Devil and Temperance, and gives him the key to the dairy.

    Part 5 · Anne’s trail

Her words come back to Louis in the Love Woods: “Life is a box within a box…”

She is waiting by a boat when Louis escapes the raid, as the boatwoman who takes him to the Isle of the Dead: a link between two worlds. You started from here as a child, she tells him, and you have come back as a man.

The doctors explain that the program fighting Belleville used Astrid to open Anne’s mind to symbols and esotericism, to prepare her for the truth.
