    Alex Eytellat

    Also known as The stranger

    Part 1 · St Jeoire

Outside the antiques shop, a stranger asks Louis for a cigarette and where people go to have fun at nine in the morning. Louis tells him to leave before he calls the police. “We’ll meet again,” the stranger says. “You seem to be a good lad… You’re just all at sea.”

    Part 5 · Anne’s trail

Louis finds a photograph of two children looking at Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead, one of them himself, the other a boy he thinks was called Alex. At his mother’s apartment, a man rings and asks whether Anne is dead, says he was watching over her, and gives his address before hanging up.

When Louis reaches the flat, Alex has been hanged. He had written a diary on the back of his photographs of Anne, and kept a key he found in the Love Woods for her. Saint Arman tells Louis that Alex was a former private investigator who had joined his cult, and that their enemies had made the police believe he was a serial killer.

On the Isle of the Dead, Louis relives their meeting in the village square and, this time, remembers him. Over a drink Alex tells him about their school trip to Noce in Italy, when Louis was “a man in a child’s body” who insisted on seeing the Böcklin painting, then went on an excursion and had an accident. Alex became a private investigator hoping to understand what happened, and was hired by Saint Arman to watch Anne.

The doctors explain that Alex was a beta version of the program fighting Belleville, sent to watch Anne, and that Belleville used the police to turn him into a wanted criminal.
