    The desk clerk

    Part 2 · Paris

Louis is woken in room 315 by a voice on the phone, following orders he apparently gave the night before. Downstairs, the clerk won’t lend him the phone or the paper, and says Louis arrived on Saturday; the weekend man, George, would know more, and is having breakfast in the café across the street.

    Part 5 · Anne’s trail

When Louis comes back to the hotel, the clerk remembers him from previous weeks, recommends the Tour d’Ivoire, and complains about noisy illegitimate couples. Asked about a red-haired woman and a man with a ponytail, he remembers them well: they always took room 315 and paid for the week.

Once Louis admits to being “something like” a private investigator, the clerk, who always wanted to be one, looks up the man’s name: Saint Arman.
